V Woodstock: Police and the Salt River Neighbourhood Watch foiled a drug deal recently and arrested a 38-year-old suspect on charges of possession of and dealing in drugs. Sergeant George Ontong and members of the neighbourhood watch were patrolling the Woodstock area when they noticed a white City Golf operating suspiciously in the vicinity of Lowley Street. Officers cornered the car and information obtained indicated that the occupants were circling in the area awaiting a drug deal. The officers’ observation led them to a maroon Nissan Almera vehicle with one occupant in Chamberlain Street. Upon cornering the vehicle and conducting a search, they seized a plastic packet that was in the hands of the driver. When they opened the packet they discovered that it contained three packets of cocaine. Further investigation led officers to the vehicle, where they seized 20 plastic packets of cocaine weighing 28g, five small packets of cocaine, five packets of cat (methcathinone), six MDMA tablets, five plastic packets full of tik weighing 7g, 19 rocks (of cocaine) and a substantial amount of cash, which was confiscated. The suspect, from Royal Road in Maitland, was arrested. The estimated street value of the items seized is R50 000. The team was applauded for their excellent work. V Woodstock: Three suspects were arrested for hijacking and armed robbery in Woodstock recently. Sergeant George Ontong and the Salt River Neighbourhood Watch were conducting crime prevention patrols in Observatory when they spotted a silver VW Polo in Bowden Street, driving around suspiciously in a robbery hotspot area. They cornered and searched the car and found and confiscated a black 9mm imitation firearm that was hidden under the driver’s seat. When officers stopped the car they noticed a white VW Golf speeding away from the scene. The two occupants of the Golf were taken for questioning at the station. While transporting the suspects to the station, information was circulating pertaining to a hijacking in Searle Street, Woodstock, where a victim had been assaulted and robbed of his white VW Jetta at gunpoint by three unknown men. When the team arrived at the station the two men were immediately pointed out by the complainant as the culprits who had assaulted him and robbed him of his vehicle. A preliminary investigation led the team to Observatory Railway Station where the hijacked vehicle was recovered and a third suspect arrested. The suspects face charges related to armed robbery and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. V Kensington: A shop owner was held at gunpoint and stabbed in his right hand in a business robbery at Sablay Food Store on the Corner of 6th Avenue and 16th Street recently. He was in the process of closing the shop at the time. Police say the owner also sustained a wound to the left side of his head. Three men allegedly approached the owner as he was locking the shop. One of them had a firearm and the other two were armed with knives. They tied the owner up while they ransacked the shop and stole cigarettes to the value of R10 000 plus R5000 in cash,as well as a wi-fi dongle and cellphones to the value of R15 000.
