Crime wrap: Mitchell's Plain

  • Tafelsig: Two men aged 20 and 30 were arrested by Mitchell’s Plain police on Saturday 1 June. Police were busy with crime prevention duties when they received information about a shooting in Waterval Street at 23:15. They entered the shack, found five men smoking drugs and searched them. Police found a bag with a 380 auto Bruco 9mm with the serial number removed, a magazine with 9mm rounds, a Taurus 38 revolver, five rounds in the chamber and a cellphone. They arrested the two, three others escaped as community members threw stones at the police car and the men. They are facing charges relating to possession of firearms, possession of ammunition and a third charge of resisting arrest.

  • Mnandi Beach: A man believed to be 35-years-old was found dead at Mnandi Beach Resort on Sunday 2 June. At 09:15 Mitchell’s Plain police were notified of a body that was lying on the beach. When they arrived there, they discovered the man had sustained stab wounds to his chest and abdomen. He also had lacerations to his neck. He was declared dead on the scene, his body was removed to the mortuary and police are investigating a case of murder, no arrests have been made yet.

  • Eastridge: A 22-year-old man was arrested on Monday 3 June by Mitchell’s Plain Cluster Crime Prevention Unit members. At 22:00 they were busy with their stop and search duties when they spotted a suspicious-looking man in Sycamore Street. They found a black revolver and six rounds in his possession. He is expected to appear in court soon.

  • Westgate: The lifeless body of a 40-year-old man was found on an open field at Broadway Circle by Mitchell’s Plain police on Saturday 8 June. The police were notified at 11:20 of the body lying on an open field at Jakes Gerwel behind houses. When police arrived there, they found the body with blue overall pants, grey tracksuit pants, blue denim jacket and blue rain jacket and he was not wearing shoes. He is believed to have been a homeless man and an inquest for an investigation has been opened by the police.

  • Beacon Valley: A 22-year-old man was found dead at Scrabble Crescent by Mitchell’s Plain police at 02:45 on Sunday 9 June. They received a complaint of a stabbing that had happened and when they arrived on the scene they found the deceased on the ground. He sustained stab wounds to his head and was declared dead on arrival. Police are investing a case of murder, the motive is still unknown and there have been no arrests made.

  • Tafelsig: A teenager (16) died after a shooting incident at a house in Bayern Munich that happened on Friday 7 June. Mitchell’s Plain police were notified of a shooting at the house. When they arrived, they discovered six people had been shot at a party. They learned an unknown man kicked open the front door and started shooting. The deceased sustained gunshot wounds to his upper body. The other injured people, two women (17) and three men, all aged 21 and 23 were rushed to hospital by private cars. A total of 14 cartridges were found on the scene. Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder and they allege the motive is possibly gang-related. No arrests have been made.
