Criminals eye water meters

2018-10-09 06:01

Police are urging residents of Athlone to secure their water management devices on their properties. The warning comes after an increase in stolen devices being reported at the local police station.

Sergeant Zita Norman, spokesperson of the station, explains that residents of Belgravia are among those who experienced a spike in water meters being stolen from their properties over the past few weeks.

The water meter, which is used to process the amount of water used on one’s premises, helps indigent households that are struggling to pay their water bills and help manage water wastage from household plumbing leaks.

Norman urged residents to put safety measures in place when having their meters read, and to lock their gates afterwards.

She also urged residents not to allow anyone access to their meter without the correct verification to read the meter.
