The four “crowbar gang” suspects who died in a collision between three cars on the M3 near Tokai on Wednesday were using a hired car.

Their getaway car, a silver-grey Toyota, was chased from Diep River. On the M3 the driver apparently lost control, causing his car to roll. The car rolled into the oncoming traffic and crashed with other cars.

Three of the suspects died on the spot and the fourth member of the gang died later the same day at hospital.

Three more people, including a five-year-old boy, were injured in the collision.

Kirstenhof police spokesperson, Sergeant Deidre Solomon, confirms the incident.

“All the suspects died in the accident. Three died on scene whilst the other suspect left the scene in a critical condition.”

“Due to the roadworks on the road to town, they drove on the island, then hit an object and they ended up in the oncoming traffic.

“We are still trying to determine if they were linked to any other cases. Though there were instruments related to crowbars found on the scene, it can’t be confirmed yet that the suspects were members of any crowbar gang,” she says.

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, says: “ER24 paramedics, along with various other services, arrived on the scene and found one car lying overturned in the middle of the road. A second wrecked car lay on the side of the road while the third had come to a stop in the middle of the highway.

“On inspection of the car on the side of the road, paramedics discovered four men lying trapped. Unfortunately, three men had already succumbed to their multiple, fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for them. The fourth man, also trapped, was found to have sustained numerous injuries.”
