Constantiaberg Dance Academy (CDA), a well-known ballet school in the Constantiaberg area that has been training young dancers, is growing in leaps and bounds.

The academy has been training children in the Royal Academy of Dance (Rad) method since 1980. It was run by Carole Wild for 26 years until 2006 when Ilze Louw took over.

They teach mostly girls from the age of three years and up. They currently have 180 children at the academy.

To show off their hard work the academy is hosting a ballet production called Beyond the sea in the Bergvliet High School theatre on Friday at 18:00 and Saturday at 11:00 and 18:00.

The production comprises children ranging in age from three to 18 years and is a showcase of dance, exploring the world above and below the ocean – from beach girls, penguins, pirates, mermaids and seagulls to visiting the octopus’s garden with starfish, crabs, clown fish, jellyfish, pearls, coral and anemones.

The school hosts a production every two years.

Louw says every student is important and therefore they offer a variety of events that cater for every experience level.

“We are committed to obtaining equilibrium between correct technical and postural training while fostering the love of dance, music and performance. The Rad training method is an internationally-recognised syllabus and successful completion of the examinations will lead to an internationally-recognised qualification,” she says.

The ballet shows give all students an opportunity to perform on stage with a professional lighting, sound and camera team. These ballet productions are a highlight and a valuable part of the students’ dance curriculum.

Students may also choose to do graded examinations and participate in the Eisteddfod, dancing solos and group dances as well as performance opportunities offered by dance- related associations, such as the Western Province Dance Teachers’ Association showcase at Artscape, Royal Academy of Dance events such as spring camps and extension programmes.

Louw adds that it has been an incredible journey at the academy. “Generally we see these students grow up in front of our eyes and we are part of their developmental stages. It is a privilege to watch these students learn not just ballet, but the skills needed for their future.

“I am absolutely passionate about positive reinforcement and installing a sense of discipline from within. We believe in building relationships with our students over the course of their childhood. The team effort from both teachers and parents has established an environment for the students to study ballet in a loving, caring yet disciplined environment.”

V Tickets cost R80 each and will be available at the door before each performance or bookings can be made via email to ilze@cdaballet.co.za or call Carol on 021 712 3983.
