Densley Carolissen (23) from Seawinds says dancing is his life. He is aiming for the stars to show the world that something good can come out of his community.

Known as Lyrical Deezy in the dance community, he has represented the country in dance competitions overseas.

“There are a lot of challenges in my community. Crime and substance abuse are so rife. I can’t even begin to talk about gang wars. A street away from mine there are always dead bodies. This is the reality that we are faced with all the time. Despite all that I dance my way out of all of it. We have a lot of talent in our communities,” he says.

Carolissen is a dancer, choreographer and artist. “I specialise in hip-hop locking. I always challenge myself with different styles. I have always had a passion for dancing and each time I try to do something new and different. I push myself to do better. I can say I’m self taught. Though I had mentors, they never taught me how to dance.”

He started dancing when he was in Grade 7. “My big break came in 2011 and I won a silver award in the SA dance championships.”

He represented South Africa in Las Vegas for four consecutive years. He has won several competitions and he believes he has much more in him. He is teaching learners of two schools in Rondebosch and he is a choreographer for a group from his church.
