An early morning operation saw Woodstock police arrest 60 suspects for various serious and less serious crimes on Thursday 7 June.

Police say 37 men and 23 women were detained for offences including drug dealing and possession of stolen property and drugs. Several mandrax tablets, tik and a substantial amount of dagga were confiscated in the operation.

Among the items seized were train doors and windows, as well as copper cables and bags filled with aluminium. “We arrested 60 suspects just this morning. We recovered 130 m and 8 m long copper cables and five bags of dagga,” says police spokesperson, Sergeant Hilton Malila. The estimated value of the seized items is R350 000.

Of the 60 suspects, Malila says 56 face trespassing charges. They were all due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Monday 11 June).

Meanwhile,Woodstock police are searching for two alleged armed robbers and seek the assistance of the community in tracing them.

“On Wednesday 11 April, at about 19:40, members of the Woodstock police attended to an armed robbery complaint in Searle Street, where two guys jumped into the complainant’s vehicle and robbed the complainant’s girlfriend at gunpoint of her belongings. The complainant alleges that whilst he stopped his vehicle in Searle Street to put water in the radiator, two unknown men jumped into his vehicle, threatened his girlfriend to hand over her belongings, and fled the scene in an unknown direction on foot,” says Malila.

The suspects made off with the victim’s wallet, bank cards and driver’s licence.

No shots were fired and the couple was unharmed during the robbery incident.

Police say the suspects are still at large but an armed robbery case is being investigated. “We obtained identikits of the suspects for publication purposes. The suspects are between the ages of 21 and 30, are slender and of average build and are light in complexion. One of the suspects has false teeth,” says Malila. V Anyone with information regarding the suspects or who witnessed the incident is asked to call the investigating officer, Sergeant Donovan Petersen, on 021 486 2804 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
