Decline in gang violence

Police in Manenberg say that they noticed a decline in the frequency of gang violence in the area last week.

“Gang violence seemed to be subdued during the week of Monday 5 to Friday 9 February. Manenberg police continued with crime prevention operation in the policing precinct, addressing illegal gang activities. Officers were deployed to do high-density patrols and stop-and-searches and to concentrate on hotspot areas was to deal with gang activity,” says Manenberg police spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett.

Police searched 40 drug houses, arresting 36 people and confiscating 413 sticks of dagga, 84.5 mandrax tablets, 5g of tik, as well as 145 units of heroin.

“During an operation, 139 units of heroin and 68 mandrax tablets were confiscated at a house in Ray Alexander Road, Tambo Village. On Thursday at 19:00, officers received information about people dealing in drugs at the house, and on searching the house they found the drugs and arrested a 30-year-old man for possession of drugs,” adds Bennett.

Nine shebeen operations were also conducted, but no arrests were made and no alcohol was confiscated.

“Brigadier Enolium Joseph, Manenberg Police Station commander, says that these types of operations will continue so that gang violence and gang activities can be rooted out within the community,” concludes Bennett­.
