Delay slows housing project

Due to delays in the civil works for the Masiphumelele housing project, it is expected that construction will begin at the end of the year.

The civil works for the Masiphumelele phase 4 housing project started late last year (“Work set to begin on Masiphumelele housing”, People’s Post, 11 October 2016).

This stage of the project has fallen slightly behind schedule, says subcouncil 19 chairperson Felicity Purchase, as contractors needed to bring in extra fill to create the gradient needed for sewage infrastructure.

It was initially anticipated that the construction of the houses would begin around July.

The first stage of the City of Cape Town’s housing project, earmarked for qualifying applicants living in Masiphumelele backyards and the informal settlement situated in the wetland, will see the construction of 227 fully serviced sites on which subsidised units will be built at a later stage.

A total of 71 sites are being created on erf 1912, off Ntantala Road and 156 sites created on erf 5131 in the wetlands.

The housing development will be constructed between the existing formal area and the sports fields (“New houses planned”, People’s Post, 12 January 2016).

Around R50m has been allocated to the housing project.

The City is currently preparing the tender documentation for the construction of buildings, Purchase says.
