Digging deep in pockets

2019-04-09 06:00

In terms of the Cape Town City Council’s new General Valuation Roll, the value of my modest house in Diep River has been increased from the previous (2016) figure of R1.550m to R3.1m. This represents an astounding increase of 100% and, in effect, this means that my rates will increase from R911.40 a month to R1822.80 a month. As an 80-year-old pensioner, I find this increase most distressing and I will be pushed hard to meet this extra cost which comes on top of the recent announced Eskom price hike. Naturally, I will be lodging an appeal before Tuesday 30 April deadline.

The new valuations are available at various public inspection centres (I went to the Alphen Centre Hall) and found the City Council officials most helpful. I understand that increases of 30% in valuations are quite common and, rather than get taken my surprise, I would urge individual ratepayers to obtain their new valuation and object when necessary.
