Children have all the reasons to be excited about the school holidays after 10 bicycles were donated to the Princess Vlei Eco-adventure Centre on Wednesday 19 June.

Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien accepted the donation of the bicycles on behalf of the City’s Recreation and Parks Department at Princess Vlei Eco-adventure Centre.

The donation was made possible by bike4all, a partnership between the Pedal Power Association and the Bicycling Empowerment Network.

It also provides an opportunity for children who do not have access to bicycles to make full use of the BMX cycle track at the Eco Centre.

The track was reopened last year after a revamp of about R250 000.

Since then, cycling has been a popular choice for after-school and holiday programmes, which attract a few hundred teenagers weekly from the local communities including Retreat, Heathfield, Southfield and Elfindale.

Currently, there are 40 children between the ages of 10 and 18 attending the June Holiday Programmes. On average 75% of these children make use of the BMX track.

More bicycles mean that more people can participate, and bicycles are issued on a first come, first served basis. Should the public wish to participate, please note that all riders are required to sign an indemnity form as participants ride at their own risk. The track is available from Mondays to Saturdays, from 08:30 to 17:00.
