Donations to stock up trauma room

2019-04-30 06:00

Diep River Police Station Trauma Room received a boost through a donation that came through a WhatsApp challenge.

The initiative of the challenge came through after one of the members of the Diep River Community Policing Forum said they are looking for ways of helping the trauma room stock up the essentials to help crime victims that come to the trauma room. The aim of the challenge is to get toiletries, nappies, baby food and hand sanitisers among other things.

Fiona Schwimmbacher, CPF’s secretary and communications coordinator says one of the residents in Ave Rouen said why don’t we do a WhatsApp challenge? “I did a post and started the challenge and donations started trickling in and streets in the Diep River precinct challenging each other to donate. Plumstead residents donated a lot,” she says.

Their wish is to have more people take up the challenge and donate. They have residents from Rorke and Smith Street in Plumstead take up the challenge. “We have a lot of areas under Diep River police and if all could join in we would have a lot for the trauma room,” she says.

Head of the trauma room Niki Venter thinks the initiative is great. “The more people who can spread the word the better. Other people don’t even realise that we exist. We see a lot of people every day and we have a counsellor in the trauma room 365 days a year. My team is incredible and they do all the hard work. Taking from their time and pockets they help out a lot. The donations are really helpful,” she says.

Venter says they deal with a lot of prevalent crimes and the things being collected will go a long way. “We get a lot of abandoned children. Most of them when they come to the trauma room they need nappies and formulas. Babies need to be cleaned up.

“We also pack up rape kits and we use a lot of hygiene packs and these things all run out quickly. Most of these are not replaced and we are grateful for this initiative,” she says.

Schwimmbacher says they are calling on everyone to come on board and help them.
