Tafelsig residents filled the streets on Friday, demanding an alleged rapist be handed over to them.

The man was arrested several weeks ago and has already appeared in court. The unrest comes as his bail application hearing nears.

The residents warned that they would take matters into their own hands should he be released.

The area then became volatile with stone throwing and rubble being burnt.

Mitchell’s Plain Crisis Forum chairperson Joanie Fredericks says she was on the scene and attempted to bring calm, alongside police.

“Community action and participation is needed and desirable, but not like this. Not when there is no plausible explanation for the actions taken. Not when children stand in front to act on what they don’t fully understand,” says Fredericks.

“Let us fight for justice as a community but not like this. This doesn’t even make sense when the object of all this violence isn’t even here because he is locked up in police custody.”
