LETTER: Don’t lie

2016-01-19 06:00

What a good start to 2016: Your story “New houses planned” (People’s Post, 12 January) would have been even better if 100% true.

The 227 planned houses (“phase 4 housing project”) are not new, but a promise of at least 12 years to the community – in fact to at least 2170 families still living in shacks (or “informal dwellings” as mayoral committee member Benedicta van Minnen confirms) and about another 6000 families living in shacks as backyarders. A promise postponed year by year.

It is the only housing project in the history of Masi directed at the poor residents (those who do not own land), beside the private-public funded Amakhaya ngoku (AN) housing project with 252 flats so far (120 still outstanding).

While the AN housing project does care 100% for residents, the new 227 houses will be shared via an “allocation split” with “applicants earliest on the database across the city” (not only Masi residents). How many? No-one knows.

Out of more than 8000 families desperately hoping for a house, fewer than 200 will get one.

Good news is that some Masi families have received letters for the first time ever from the City confirming that they are “maybe considered”. What an excitement! And carefully hidden, so no-one in Masi knows how many have received such letters.

Every effort to create development in Masi, especially housing, is most appreciated. Even more if told in full truth.
