Stressful competitions bore positive results for 11-year-old Simoné Jacobs of Simon van der Stel Primary School in Wynberg on Saturday 3 November.

Jacobs earned herself national colours by scooping two gold medals and three silvers when she represented the province at the National Gym Games Competition in Pretoria.

This has opened doors for her to represent her country next year. This is a dream come true for her because that was the idea she had when she started gymnastics.

“I saw that sport can open doors for you,” she says.

She says at the age of nine, she saw gymnastics as an interesting and enjoyable sport.

She had friends who were already members of the gymnastics club and she decided to join.

“So far everything looks good, I am so proud of myself. Even though I knew I gave it my best from the beginning, I never thought I would have gone this far by now.”

She is committed to practising three times a week and sticks to the schedules at her school and club.

Simoné says that over the years she has learned a lot on both a personal and club level.

Unlike many children her age, Simoné chooses to eat healthily and avoids sweets.

She says this is because the sport code demands that a person be physically fit.She prioritises warming up by doing stretches to relax her muscles before and after doing any gymnastics movements.

“It is important that we start with warm-ups to avoid breaking yourself or tweaking something on your body.”
