Two students have received bursaries to help them reach their academic dreams.

Simanathia Hendricks and Demi De Long were both selected to receive the bursaries from the AJ foundation and were awarded at a special ceremony on Thursday last week.

The ceremony was held at the Lentegeur Subcouncil offices and the girls’ families were invited to celebrate with them.

The AJ Foundation is a non profit company that focuses on youth development and community upliftment in the Cape Metropolitan area. Last year, the programme was rolled out to enable the students to study this year.

Hendricks who is studying Psychology at the University of the Western Cape was awarded a bursary of R40 000 toward her fees and De Long who is studying Education at Falsebay College was awarded just over R6000 covering the fees for their 2018 course year.

Hendricks says: “I am so grateful to the foundation to be able to reach my dreams and further my academic career. Without you, I would not have done this. So many students want to study and they get bursaries but then they don’t have the network of support. Here we have mentors that continues and I can’t wait to give back and start participating.”

De Long agrees with Hendricks saying: “I want to thank the foundation for everything and for granting me the opportunity to be chosen.

“Especially for the interview process because most of the bursaries are only based on grades. Here we could sit and speak to you and tell you more about what we want to achieve and it was not only based on our marks.”

The foundation works across the city doing various outreach projects.
