From tax to text, this Green Point man is bringing home an inspirational message.

Lance Brown (42) originally from Westridge has released his first book titled The Driver of Change.

The book is based on his journey growing up in Mitchell’s Plain and progressing from a job as a delivery driver to becoming a tax consultant for one of the world’s leading financial services firms and then finding himself in London giving a presentation to a group of professionals on South African personal income tax.

“I now consider myself a different type of driver, a ‘Driver of Change’ who inspires individuals to create opportunities and to maximize their potential,” says Brown.

Having done motivational presentations on a regular basis at schools and corporates with the aim of inspiring individuals to create opportunities for themselves, instead of waiting for them to happen, Brown was inspired to pen his thoughts.

“After attending a meeting at the Professionals Speakers Association of Southern Africa, many of the professional speakers at the event were authors and in order to secure more speaking engagements, we were encouraged to publish a book which will not only be used for marketing, but it also gives you credibility,” says Brown.

The book took about six months to write and publish.

“The book was self-published, so I needed to find out what the process of publishing a book entailed. This was a learning curve, but a great experience,” he says.

“At this point, my focus is getting the book out into the market, locally and internationally which I have started doing. I have sent the book to more than 150 companies around the world with the intention on securing international speaking engagements. The experience I am gaining through this whole process will be converted into another book. At this point, I am leaning towards a title ‘You are your Own Opportunity’.”

Brown grew up in Westridge and attended Princeton High School.

“During my first year of high school, I witnessed gang fights and police brutality on students as it was during the apartheid period,” he says.
Now speaking at various levels, he drives home very important messages.

“You can achieve anything you put your mind to and that your past does not define you, it refines you. Set a goal and pursue that goal with passion and do what is needed and more to make things happen,” he says.

“Writing a book is not difficult, all you need to do is remain focused and don’t be scared to ask for help.”
The book can be purchased directly from Brown at R140 per copy.
