The dream of a Tafelsig community worker has been realised.

After 10 months of many ups and downs, Joanie Fredericks launched Ladies Own Transport Company, a branch of her women empowerment programmes, at a high tea on Thursday.

The initiative started in January when Fredericks saw the need to empower women to drive (“Driving women empowerment”, People’s Post, 23 January).

The initiative started by offering free learner’s licence classes, with countless women of all ages now having successfully passed their learner’s tests. “When I put the call out, I thought that Tafelsig would not show up and they did, more than 500. There were some who thought it was a scam, now 10 months later, we are still waiting for the scam to happen,” says Fredericks.

The event also revealed a big announcement – the unveiling of their first car.

The car was funded by Zeena Murphy, a woman from outside of the area who believed in Fredericks’s cause.

She says she saw the work Fredericks had been doing on Facebook and contacted her.

Ladies Own Transport Services is a company that will offer driving lessons to women from the area at a discounted rate to cover petrol costs.

The initiative is aimed at getting women empowered to drive.

There is also a job opportunity for registered driving instructors.
