Residents of Nyasa Road, Lakeview in Retreat can breathe a sigh of relief after a problem house in the street was closed off with bricks.

The house, which is owned by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), had been an eyesore for them. For some time they tried to get Prasa to act.

Two weeks ago the house was closed off with bricks and it has been put up for sale.

There are allegations that the house was used as a drug den, for gangsterism and prostitution and that it was used by vagrants. The house was also allegedly used for storing and stripping stolen goods.

Nadia Booth, who stays close to the house, says: “The house was used by all kinds of people. It was scary. We had to get pictures on the state of the house to show that it was really degrading.”

For three or four years the residents had to deal with that. The Lakeview Neighbourhood Watch stepped in to help.

Monica Petersen, chairperson of the watch, says the house was a huge headache for them.

“This house was a problematic one. We had to patrol and check it all the time because a lot of things were going on in there. People were sleeping there. Residents who complained about their stuff being stolen ... we found it there. I remember one time when we were patrolling there were three guys and a girl there smoking and we had to tell them to get out. One night we found another woman sleeping there so we had to tell her to leave as she wasn’t safe,” she says.

Petersen says they had to involve City of Cape Town, which stepped in to get Prasa to act.

Petersen says they are really glad that something was done about the house after so many years. “We are very grateful and residents will feel much safer.”

People’s Post contacted Prasa to confirm if the house has been put up for sale but it failed to respond.
