Dump site worth R1.9m

The City of Cape Town has revealed that the construction of the drop-off facility for non-perishable waste in 13 Avenue, Kensington is valued at R1.9m. It will be built on the open land near Dapper Road.

Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy, says the site would be approximately 982m². She says the construction is expected to be completed within six months.

Earlier this month People’s Post reported on the approval for the construction site (“Area gets own waste dump”, 7 November).

The City of Cape Town could not provide the details at the time of going to print.

Limberg says this facility will offer a free service to the residents who may drop off up to 1.5 tonnes of non-perishable waste materials three times per day.

She says: “Residents who are springcleaning or cleaning their garages can drop off non-hazardous items which they no longer require. Residents who are doing building renovations can bring their builder’s rubble to the site. This will be sent for crushing and reuse. This will assist with the reduction of illegal dumping of builder’s rubble. Garden refuse can also be dropped off free of charge. This is chipped onsite and used for processing into compost.”

Limberg confirms that the implementation took longer than it was expected as the construction has been on the cards since 2013.

“Yes, the duration of the building plan application process was longer than anticipated. The site handover meeting was conducted on Thursday 26 October,” she says.
