Early morning commuters beware

2016-06-07 06:00

Residents are being warned to keep a lookout for potential dangers ahead of their early morning commutes.

Police recently issued a statement urging pedestrians who walk to bus and train stops to be more cautious, following an increase in robberies.

On Monday 23 May at 06:15 a man was walking in Merrydale Avenue near Rocklands on his way to Kapteinsklip train station. A maroon Honda Ballade stopped next to him. A man got out and threatened him with a firearm. The man grabbed his bag and drove off.

In another case on Monday 30 May at 06:50 police received a report of someone who witnessed a similar incident when a woman was standing on the corner of Bordeaux Way and Park Avenue, waiting for transport.

She was standing close to the road when a red Toyota passed by slowly.

The driver then made a U-turn and the passenger – half leaning out of the car window – suddenly grabbed her bag before the car sped off.

Police urge residents to follow these precautions:

. Always try to walk in a group,

. Don’t display your cellphone or jewellery in public,

. Always be aware of your surroundings,

. When travelling on foot, use busy routes and well-lit walkways,

. Avoid isolated and dark areas,

. Walk against the flow of traffic so that vehicles cannot approach you from behind without you seeing them, and

. Avoid short-cuts through fields and other deserted places.

Police also urge people to join the existing community structures such as the neighbourhood watch and street committees.

“We need our community to support us and take a stand against crime by reporting these activities.”

V Anyone with information on the two robberies is urged to contact the investigating officer on 021 370 1782.
