Crime awareness and preventing the spread of social ills was the main motivation for a local safety event.

Held in Westridge by the Merino Block Watch, hundreds of children and residents from the area attended the event.

“The motivation [for hosting the event] was to get the word out, making the youth aware of the dangers of drug abuse and gangsterism. It is important to me to host these events, educating our future leaders of tomorrow,” says Bonita Wood, Merino Block Watch chairperson.

“We had Pink Ladies out to motivate and educate our children on how to be alert and aware of strangers, abduction and what to look out for when strangers want to lure them away.

“There were also fingerprints [taken with details of children listed on a] certificate to help police [should it be necessary].”

Guests included local biker and car clubs with speakers like Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum deputy chairperson Ashley Potts and sector commander Captain Mornay Kleinhans.

The event saw around 150 adults and 160 children at Merino Park. There was face painting, a vigil from Victory Outreach Rehab and a drill from the Westville Primary School drilling squad.
