Volunteers from a local mosque fed more than 20 000 people in Tafelsig as part of their Eid celebrations.

Masjidul Aashiq in Tafelsig teamed up with organisation 99 Pots to cook food for the underprivileged residents of Searidge Park, Tafelsig and surrounds.

“This is the first project for this year with the organisation 99 Pots in conjunction with Masjidul Aashiq making food for Eid at the Masjidul Aashiq premises,” says Riyaad Essop, the mosque’s secretary.

Residents and patrons joined together, with the help of donors, to cook 50 pots of food at the mosque on Sunday.

“We fed about 24 000 people of various communities for the day of Eidul Fitr.

“We would like to thank the donor, organisers, the community and the Masjidul Aashiq imaamat and committee for a successful event,” says Essop.

The initiative had been in the pipeline for a while with the donor, who does not want to be named, wanting to help make it possible for a long time.

The project was initiated one month before Ramadan but was finalised during Ramadan.

The organisers hope to continue the initiative annually.
