Eileen Ferrier is a Retreat resident who recently celebrated her 96th birthday and is still going strong. As one of two remaining Ferrier siblings, who once constituted a group of five, Eileen and her sister, Gadija Heuwel, celebrated her birthday with her children and nieces, Desmond, Kenny, Charlie, May, Cora, Bruce, Bonny Diener and Theresa Eckles.“We celebrated with her and her children at 8:30 that morning and thereafter we had some tea at her house,” said Bonny, Eileen’s niece. Her birthday celebrations took place on Saturday 20 July, and she has no plans to let her age hold her back. “She does her own housework and she does the cooking, along with her son. “She is as strong as an ox, you won’t believe it,” she added.Bonny recalls the countless times that the down-to-earth Eileen would enjoy her leisure time at home with her children, nieces and nephews. “If she decides she’s kicking off her shoes, she’ll do just that and even walk outside barefoot to say goodbye to us.”Bonny says one of the best qualities she admires in her aunt is her gusto: “She’s a very stylish lady. “She loves her jewellery and doing her hair and her clothing. And she has such an amazing spirit.”Before Eileen retired she was a hairdresser; that was her passion and the job that kept her young and on-trend. Gadija will also celebrate a milestone later this month when they all unite once again to mark her 87th birthday.
