Emma Hutchison from Claremont is flying the South African flag in Las Vegas and New York City.

She is representing the country among many other participating nations from today (Tuesday 2 October), to Tuesday 16 October.

The 16-year-old is among six local teens that have been chosen by the College of Magic to represent South Africa at the annual United States trip.

The tour gives young magicians the opportunity to explore the magic entertainment capitals of the world.

This opportunity comes after winning the 2018 Western Cape Championships held at Bergvliet High School on Saturday 8 September.

Hutchinson was the only female magician to compete against eight male participants (“Little magicians to battle it out,” People’s Post, 4 September).

The multi-talented teen is keen to share her magic ability with international fans of the art in the USA and to grow in her performance abilities.

“I feel so unbelievably lucky to be able to experience a trip such as this. It is an amazing opportunity to travel to the USA to represent the College of Magic and South Africa, and I couldn’t be prouder.

“ It is my first time travelling internationally with the College of Magic to represent South Africa in magic.”

Hutchison says she did not have it easy at the provincial championships.

“The Western Cape Champs were rather stressful for me as I took part in both the close-up and stage competitions.”

In preparation for the trip, the College of Magic organised many meetings and bonding sessions to discuss and finalise details as well as to get to know those with whom they are travelling. The participant have also been practising a few effects they could perform overseas.

Hutchison says magic has opened doors for her in terms of performance and travel and given her confidence on stage and the ability to interact with many different people and cultures.

She encourages young people to believe in themselves and not to be afraid to be different.

“Put yourself out there, dare to be different, try something new. If you put in the time and effort, you can achieve great things.”
