Philisa Abafazi Bethu (PAB) is nurturing and showcasing young talent from Retreat and neighbouring areas, to show that there is hope for the future of the youth despite the challenges faced in the area.

In celebrating National Youth Day (16 June) and the youth in the community, the organisation that assists residents with issues of abuse will host a Youth Day event at the Rooikrans Sports Field in Grassy Park on Saturday at 10:00

The event is spearheaded by Greg Philander, programme manager of Philisa Abafazi Bethu and youth representative on ward forum 110 for the City of Cape Town.

In the hopes of making this event a success and spreading the word, additional financial support from the ward allocation budget was provided by councillor Shanen Rossouw. The event is a follow up of PAB’s Youth 1 Billion Youth Rising Against Gender Based Violence 365 Days Campaign, launched in February.

Regarding the catalyst for this event and all of the programmes run by PAB, Philander explains: “Most of the youth do not complete school due to various social reasons. As an organisation we decided that we need to ensure that the children in our programmes do not become a statistic.”

The organisation has identified various speakers who will act as the ambassadors for youth development from Lavender Hill, as they have challenged the inequalities faced by many and overcome the injustices that are experienced daily.

To empower the youth, there will be a number of activities taking place on the day. “We will have drilling displays, sports in the form of soccer and netball, entertainment in the form of exposing talent in dance, drama, rap, bands and song, with special guest Alex the Bassist,” Philander says.

There is still room for more talented artists to perform, and people can apply by contacting PAB.

V  Performing artists who wish to share their talents may contact Miceala on 021 802 4030 for inclusion, or email admin@philisabafazi.org.
