Rustenburg Girls’ High School hosted the fifth edition of the Champions Cup u.16 hockey and netball tournament from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 April.

A total of 18 hockey teams and 18 netball teams from across the country arrived at the school campus from 10:00 on Friday for the Champions Cup

Rustenburg had three teams enter the event: the u.16A netball team; the u.16A hockey team and the Rustenburg Coltshockey team.

Geila Wills, Marketing/Public Relations for Rustenburg Girls’ High School says there was a carnival atmosphere on campus, fully equipped with an athlete’s village, hydration station and many vendors on site selling beverages, coffees, breakfasts, burgers, pancakes, chair cushions and sports equipment.

“The competition was of an extremely high standard and the visitors were treated to exceptional levels of play and outstanding sportsmanship from all teams.

“It was a treat to witness the SA umpires for both the netball and hockey matches in action,” says Wills.

The final of the hockey was an all Eastern Cape affair with Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) beating Woodridge in a showdown after the full-time score was 0-0. The bronze medals went to St Cyprians School.

In the final of the netball tournament, the trophy was won by St Stithians after they beat the host school, Rustenburg 14-11 in a very exciting match.

This match was played indoors due to the rain on Sunday. The bronze medals went to Reddam Constantia.

Rustenburg looks forward to hosting this event again in 2020.

Technology was provided by MyComLink to keep all parents up to date with their team’s scores, the logs and photos provided in real time.

The success of this was that the event page had 31 600 event visits.
