Keeping a healthy body and mind could be easier than you think, thanks to a local’s initiative.

Giving classes for as little as R5, qi gong teacher Tamsin Nel is urging more people to join.

“I thought that I’d like to give back to the community, especially with our economic situation. Many people travel to different areas to experience a bit of yoga, pilates, thai chi or other things and here is where people need it most,” says Nel.

She started the classes in May in a bid to give back.

She started with the craft group at Weltevreden Centre.

She started practising qi gong (similar to thai chi) in 2008.

“I was actually looking for a yoga class but found qi gong at one of the centres close to where I was living. I stuck with doing qi gong after I saw the benefits of the practice.

“I find that doing qi gong makes me a calmer person and that I’m able to cope better with life and its situations.

“None of the movements are stressful and works with the body and calms the mind,” says Nel.

Qi gong relaxes the body and is especially good for older people as it helps with movement and flexibility and is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels.

“The classes start with a calming of the mind exercise with reflection, then on to a warm-up, which is to warm up the muscles and slow movements working in unison with our body, followed by a bit of meditation,” she says.

The classes are open to everyone and cost R5 per class.

The classes take place at the Weltevreden Recreation Centre every Wednesday from 18:30 to 19:30.
