The City of Cape Town has warned motorists about traffic delays between Bakoven and Suikerbossie near Hout Bay due to mudslides following a storm on Thursday (31 May) night.

Charlotte Powell, spokesperson for Disaster Risk Management, says the City’s Traffic Service is manning a stop-and-go system to help with the flow of traffic while clearing the road.

She says the storm has caused severe damages in some areas of the peninsula, including the uprooting of trees and damaging electricity lines in Constantia, Parow Valley,  Langa, Durbanville, Mfuleni, Bridgetown, Constantia, Cape Farms and Clovelly.

Powell says the Recreation and Parks Department has cleared uprooted trees. She adds that officials have cleared most roadways and unblocked drains across the city.

“Chapman’s Peak Drive is open to traffic, but mudslides in Hout Bay and Camps Bay have not been cleared yet. Electricity still has to be restored in a number of areas including Bridgetown, Constantia, Parow Valley,  Langa, Durbanville, Mfuleni, Cape Farms and Clovelly. Technicians are onsite.”
