‘Explore night sky wonders’

2018-08-07 06:01

The full lunar eclipse on Friday 27 July had everyone grabbing binoculars to experience this phenomenon that only happens once in a lifetime. That is why the aim of the South Peninsula Astronomy Club (Sparc) in Fish Hoek is to stimulate people to think about the universe and to explore the wonders of the night sky.

“We meet every month on the first Thursday of the month at 19:30 at the minor hall at the Fish Hoek Civic Centre. Through the years we have had a wide range of speakers address us on every conceivable aspect of astronomy, including radio astronomy,” says Peter Laubscher, chairperson.

On Thursday 2 August the guest speaker was Alan Mitchell and he spoke about the fundamental particles of matter. Laubscher will be the speaker on Thursday 6 September and will speak about “Venus – our evil twin”. Laubscher gives an overview of the night sky for the month in question and takes part in the ensuing discussion, which is often lively, he says. Sparc was founded in 2006 by Wolf Lange.V Contact Peter on 021 785 2681 or 073 470 3185.
