Extended hours at local pub

An application for the extension of liquor trading hours at the Around Midnight Pub and the Swingers Pub and Restaurant in Kenwyn was approved at the Rondevlei Subcouncil on Tuesday 14 June.

The establishment in Wetton Road applied to trade liquor from Monday and Saturday between 10:00 until 04:00.

Previous trading hours at the restaurant and pub was from 11:00 until 02:00.

Ward councillor Monty Oliver says they have opted to support the application “because I have not had any complaints or issues with the establishment”.

Ottery Civic Association chairperson Shabodien Roomanay says: “These kind of applications come through our organisations all the time. However, most of the time we do not support it. We have about 15 liquor outlets in this precinct alone and this does not sit well with trying to curb alcoholism and alcohol abuse.”

He adds they are working on a process to declare the area a “dry area”.

“There have been issues with various outlets selling liquor at extended hours and this is where criminal activity and deaths come in. Last year we had the incident where a car guard was stabbed to death outside a popular pub,” he says.

Noel Crowie of the Kenwyn Ratepayer’s Association says this approval could have a knock on effect. “We are not disagreeing with the approval but this places a burden on neighbourhood watches and police as more resources will be needed for patrols.”

He also adds the extended trading hours “will not go well with the safe road campaigns”. “Longer hours mean people will now be drinking later and driving under the influence. Also, when establishments allow extended drinking hours, this impacts on sex workers hours as well and they will be operating later in the area as well.”

Owner of the two establishments, Brad Harris, says he cannot comment before he has been notified by the subcouncil. “However, I have been operating these businesses in the area for more than 20 years and we have always been compliant with regard to the correct processes,” Harris says.
