Extra classes offered

2018-06-05 06:01

An initiative started by the South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF) in 2012 has since become a beacon for community

Initially called the “Yes” programme, it was decided that in 2016 the project would be headed by the community and has since been facilitated by Al Mieftaagh Educational Centre (AMEC).

“There was a lack of tutoring support in our community to assist school learners who were struggling with maths, English and physical sciences and whose parents could not afford private tuition,” says Moegsien Jacobs, AMEC director.

The centre now offers mathematics, English, physical science and life skills classes on a Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 12:00.

Jacobs is the coordinator for the project, which has two teachers covering the maths and English sessions.

“We are appealing to education students to come and volunteer so that they can gain experience, and also retired teachers to come and plough back some of their skills into the community. There are no age restrictions and all school-going youth are welcome,” he says.

“Anyone from any area is welcome as long as they can get to our venue on a Saturday morning. The importance of this initiative is to get our community out of poverty, which says that for the current generation to escape poverty they need to stay in school and get a good education and be career oriented.”

The Saturday school offers classes to grades 4 to 12 and there is still room for learners in grades 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12. Classes take place at Masjied Mieftaagh situated in AZ Berman Drive, Lentegeur. Registration for classes is R50 with a monthly fee of R60.
