Facelifts for flats

The next phase of the upgrades to the City of Cape Town’s rental units is set to be implemented in Heideveld and will include small soccer fields.

“The two public open spaces behind Grace and Susan courts will boast new five-a-side soccer areas,” promises Anthony Moses, ward 44 councillor.

The upgrades planned include repairing leaks and blocked sewers as well as plumbing installations. The rewiring of the entire electrical installation and repairing and lighting deteriorating staircases are also included. Repairs to leaking roofs, fascias, gutters and down pipes are also carried out.

Improvements to the external appearance of the units in the form of door and window repairs are planned.

Moses says the next phase of the upgrade project will take on the external aspect of the overall project.

“This includes a number of parks which will be created in order to have more recreational spaces.

“Added to that, we will be carrying out the maintenance and upgrading of lights attached to the flats. Old park equipment will have to be refurbished.

“The courts will be fenced with some flats that will have double gates. Where we cannot fit a double gate a single gate will be installed due to the high incline at some of the flats,” says Moses.

He says the fencing will serve as a safe perimeter for the people who live in the respective blocks.

“The flats in between will also be fitted with new trees as part of a beautification programme.

“Further discussions are ongoing with City parks in order to beautify our area. At this stage we cannot have a park at every court, but as funding allows us, we will do our utmost best to have a beautiful Heideveld.”
