Family ‘friend’ sentenced for murder

Daniel Cloete from Heideveld has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was found guilty of murder in the Wynberg Regional court on Tuesday 23 August. Five years of his sentence has been suspended for five years.

Cloete (25) shot and killed Aneeqah Johnson (30) in Noreen Court on Saturday 30 May.

“On that fateful day the 30-year-old woman and friends, including the suspect, were at an address in Noreen Court where they seemed to be socialising.

Daniel Cloete then pulled out a firearm and loaded it with a magazine,” states Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett.

Cloete then pointed the firearm at all sitting around in the room when a shot rang out, hitting Johnson’s head.

She was rushed to Heideveld Emergency Centre where she succumbed to her injuries. Cloete fled the scene and was on the run for several days.

Bennett says that Detective Sergeant Craig Keating, who is attached to the Manenberg serious violent crimes unit, conducted several interviews and gathered witness statements linking him to the shooting.

Cloete was on the run for three days before he was arrested.

“It was then discovered that the firearm he used was an Uzi machine gun. It was never recovered. According to Cloete he is a member of the Hard Living gang and he returned the gun to the Hard Livings,” Bennett adds.

After a thorough investigation the case came to a close with a positive outcome for the victim’s family and the community of Heideveld.

“This was a sensitive and difficult case because of gang influence and intimidation within the area. Well done to Detective Seargent Keating for his dedication, loyalty and tenacity in pursuing criminals and bringing them to the court to be tried and sentenced, restoring the integrity of SAPS Manenberg and working towards making the Manenberg community a safe area to work and play in,” he concludes.
