There is a wealth of motoring experience waiting to assist you behind the counter of Mr.O’s spares in Portlands.

Run by Solly Osman and his sons, Mohammed and Yaseen, the business has grown from strength to strength since its inception.

“Mr.O’s was founded in July 2004, but my father has been in the motor spares industry for over three decades. He previously managed other motor spares stores, but his dream was always to open his own,” says Mohammed.

And at the age of 57 he made that dream a reality with a small shop in Merrydale Avenue, where it is housed today.

“He decided to ‘just do it’, and after spending so much time in the industry it made sense,” says Mohammed. “Motor spares are in our blood and when he wanted to open up the shop it was just so phenomenal and it actually took off.”

So much so that his children all left their jobs to join him in making his dream a success.

“We were all so involved and on the same path that when the shop became understaffed, it just made sense for us all to quit our jobs and help make him realise his dream,” he says.

All adding their individual expertise to various departments of the company saw it quickly flourish into one of the big names in the motor spares industry within Mitchell’s Plain.

Starting in a small shop, Mr.O’s found themselves needing to expand and grow their shop, soon resulting in the addition of a workshop and further development on the cards for the near future.

The store is their family legacy and this seeps into every aspect of business at Mr.O’s.

“It is a business, but we run it like a family. We work hard and we play hard. We believe that treating our employees well and keeping them happy makes a big difference,” says Mohammed.

This means they have also initiated an internal project that helps their employees realise thier dreams and offers them assistance with problems.

“We also believe in giving back, because no-one became poor by giving,” he says.

And in the spirit of giving, the store holds a birthday sale every year. However, because it was during the month of Ramadaan this year, the sale was postponed to this month. With their strong family values as the driving force behind their continued and future success, Mohammed and Yaseen are looking to take the business to a modern market through the recent addition of social media.

“This is the second generation now and we want to keep the dream but also take it further. We specialise in hard-core spares, but we now want to add the cooler things such as tuning and performance. That is big in Mitchell’s Plain,” says Mohammed.

Their advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simply to follow their dreams because it is never too late to start.

And with his knowledge passed on to his sons, one thing is for sure, at Mr.O’s you can rest assured they will always make a plan.

Mr. O would like to thank all his loyal customers and dedicated staff for making his dream come true.
