Fashion designers in Masiphumelele will showcase their talent to the local community and others at the Masi Art Fashion Show that will take place in Masiphumelele Community Hall from 11:00 to 15:00 on Freedom Day, 27 April.

The idea behind the show is for designers in the area to network and encourage others to follow their dreams even if they are from the townships.

Though working with other creatives, the idea to create a platform to expose local talent came from rugby coach and designer Xolani Mahlulo..

“We can’t even deny it, there is so much talent in the townships. The problem is how do we get their names out there and tap into a platform where we will be recognised as the designers that we on bigger platforms,” says Mahlulo.

Mahlulo adds that part of the aim of the show is to inspire those that don’t know what to do and are just sitting at home to copy from those that are already doing it. “We want to inspire other people from the community to come learn from others who have been doing this for long. We want people to get involved in the show and learn.”.

Starting a business or a brand is not easy and Mahlulo says most local people start in small rooms in their backyards. They want to help people grow and collaborate as creatives hence the idea of the show. “We don’t really know each other as creatives. So we want this platform to be a place where we come together to grow and support each other,” he says.

Mahlulo adds that with business comes a lot of pressure but knowing that there is someone close by that can help you alleviate some of the pressure will help a lot. “Ultimately what we all want is to be able to make a living through what we love but the road to there can be tough. We need to diversify and grow the business. We hope the show will help us grow local talent,” he says.
