It only took a brief motivational letter of sincerity for a Plumstead resident to win this year’s Careers24 #FashionYourCareer competition.

Michelle Freudiger was one of the two local winners of the annual competition.

She received style makeovers, help with her new CVs, and a financial contribution towards furthering education and new outfits to suit her style.

According to a statement, the competition is aimed at showing that people do not have to sacrifice their individuality in their respective workplaces. It shows people that it is possible to embrace and build on their personal brands in a professional manner.

Freudiger says through her journey with the competition, she discovered her feminine look and that she actually loves softer fabrics and would incorporate more colour into her wardrobe.

“I used to wear mostly neutral colours. A typical work outfit would made up of cotton chinos, a crisp button-down shirt teamed with leather brogues and a blazer,” she says.

The competition taught her that a well-curated capsule wardrobe that suits one’s preferences is a more sustainable choice than a wardrobe “cluttered with impulse” buys and high fashion items.

She says one has to understand their dressing style as well as their place of work’s dress code.

Freudiger says: “Then create a list of capsule wardrobe items and try to purchase the best quality you can afford, add some fun accessories which will show off your unique style. This will also save you money in the long run.”

She has been working in the corporate field which requires a business smart dress code since the beginning of her career at the financial services straight out of school.

She worked through the accolades and is now a compliance administrator at one of South Africa’s top asset managers.

She defines fashion as an expression of personal style and unique individuality. And explaining her reasons for entering the competition Freudiger says the decision was made with integrity and she wrote the letter from the heart. “But I was still able to express myself clearly and succinctly. I believe a makeover and professional CV are fitting as I start a new chapter in my life.”

She says she is currently focused on completing a programme in Risk Management and looking for her next job opportunity. Freudiger is not the only one happy with her new look but her friends and family too as she says she has been receiving many compliments.
