Feeding the hungry in Parkwood

2019-05-14 06:00

Despite its challenges, the Parkwood Community Upliftment Organisation continues to establish initiatives to bring about change in its community.

The organisation has now established a feeding programme aimed at providing meals for children.

They hope to start serving meals from this Thursday at 18:00.

According to the leader of the project, Max Amansure, they will be serving meals at least once a week until they have a reliable support system.

They collect donations and then prepare meals. They hope to at least have 30 kilogrammes of rice, meat, potatoes, onions and any amount of vegetables, and hamburgers.

“The support has not been quite positive, but we hope things will change with time,” Amansure says.

He says the youth of Parkwood is determined to work hard to change and improve the reputation of their community. And since they have seen that waiting for help from anyone does not help, they are prepared to use the little that is available to uplift each other.

He says members of the organisation all grew up in the area and know exactly what it feels to go to bed on an empty stomach and what impact this has on one’s life.

“You lack motivation and start thinking of an easy way out of poverty, that is why we have so much violence here,” Amansure said.

“This programme is our attempt to give hope to the young children, keeping them focused and setting a good example,” says Amansure.

The organisation is aware of other charities in the community and they aim to work with them, and not to compete against anyone. Amansure says there are a lot of people that need help and the more hands involved, the better.
