Police have participated in an extension of Operation Fiela in Mandalay.

On Friday police, the Cluster stabilisation unit, metro police, law enforcement and traffic officials participated in the major integrated operation in the Mandalay area.

The operation focused on stop and searches, search warrants, shebeens, spaza shops, vehicle check points (VCP) and counterfeit goods.

At a VCP in Swartklip Road, a blue Nissan was stopped and a police officer saw the driver trying to hide something as he was stopping.

The officer searched the car and found a .38 special revolver with six bullets.

The 49-year-old produced a license belonging to his late father who died in 2012.

The suspect was then arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition.

Another two people were arrested for possession of an dangerous weapons after they were searched and five people were arrested with drugs during the operation.

Crime hot spots were also targeted.

The acting station commander Colonel Simasa Mjali says police will maintain their zero tolerance approach in the combatting and investigation of crime.

Mjali expressed his gratitude to other law enforcement agencies for their constant involvement and assistance in the fight against crime.
