Fencing at the Town Centre is set to be completed by the end of January at the latest.

A large portion of the fencing has been completed through funding by businesses in the shopping centre.

“This is a collective effort, but I must congratulate the business owners for taking the initiative and funding the fencing project because this is their livelihoods,” says ward 79 councillor, Solomon Philander. He says the request for fencing was made by owners in the Town Centre Plaza after the private hospital completed its fencing.

Philander says business owners then approached Mayoral Urban Renewal Programme manager Ivan Anthony and subcouncil 12 manager, Johnson Fetu.

The only portion to be completed is the stretch along 3rd Avenue, which continues from the Wespoort Drive entrance to the taxi rank and bus terminus, past the police station and ending in 4th Avenue.

“We are not trying to gate the area in or fence it off completely, what we want to achieve is a collective crime response, where exits are limited and groups can communicate with each other to block criminals off at the exits,” Philander says.

He says currently there is limited control, making this approach impossible.

Access to the area for emergency vehicles has been taken into consideration, says Philander.

R1.5 million has been allocated for the fencing and a contractor to do the work is being finalised. Pictures tomorrow
