Christmas came early for the elderly residents of the Douglas Murray Home for the Aged in Retreat this year. They were surprised by employees of Lew Geffen Sothebys International Realty in Claremont with a visit by Santa Claus, gifts and something to eat last Wednesday.Mandy Botto of Sothebys says this was something that the seniors needed as the year rounds off. “This was just to cheer them up and also get them in the festive mood. For most of the senior citizens at the old age home Christmas is just another day as their families have forgotten about them. They don’t get any presents or anything so we thought it might be nice for us to do something for them and spend a day with them just talking about everything,” she says.“This year we decided to go to Douglas Murray because we wanted to bless the elderly whose children don’t have time for them anymore, so we decided to give them our time. They deserve to be loved,” says Botto. When they walked into the home they were met with eyes full of questions. “When we got there they looked at us as if they were saying: ‘What are you doing here?’ But as soon as we started setting up you could see their faces light up with joy. They were so grateful for what we have done for them and you could see that joy on their faces. It was such a heart-warming moment and as they told us their children that don’t visit them it made our visit special and worthwhile. “It was such a nice thing to make them smile despite all the challenges that they face. At least this will put them in the mood for Christmas just like everybody else,” says Botto.
