Fewer local crimes reported, say cops

Police reported crime statistics of local areas last week.

Diep RiverOne person was murdered in this policing precinct in the year up to March this year compared to two in the previous year.

Common robbery decreased 4% to 91 cases. Assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm went up 29% to 31 cases this past year.

Sexual offences (including rape, sexual assault and attempted sexual offence) decreased 6% to 15 cases.

Crimes detected as a result of police action increased 14% to 224 cases.

Drug-related crimes decreased 21% to 114 cases. Property-related crimes decreased 19% to 1265 cases.

Hout BayCrime in general went down in the Hout Bay policing precinct from April last year to March this year compared to the previous year. Contact crimes dropped 4% to 515 cases.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased 14% to 119 cases. There was an increase in attempted murder from 10 cases last year to 14.

Twenty-one cases of rape were reported compared to 15 the previous year.

House robberies decreased to 48 from 51 cases.

Theft out of cars and car theft decreased 40% to 199 cases.

KirstenhofContact crimes dropped 8% to 373 cases.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased 8% to 105 cases.

Common robbery decreased by 6 cases to 63.

House break-ins almost halved to 241 ­cases.

Theft out of cars and car theft dropped by seven cases to 73.

Other serious crimes, like shoplifting, doubled to 210 cases.

Commercial crime decreased 11% to 123 cases.

Crimes detected as a result of police action decreased 37% to 254 cases.

WynbergContact crimes in the Wynberg policing precinct increased 22% to 686 cases in the year from April last year to March this year compared to the previous year.

Common robbery increased 23% to 121 cases.

Theft out of cars and car theft decreased 9% to 702 cases.

House break-ins decreased 2%. A total of 353 cases were reported in the year up to March this year, down from 359 the previous year.

Crimes detected as a result of police action increased 14% to 725 cases.

Drug-related cases increased 10% to 639 cases.

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition halved to five cases.

There were 81 cases of people driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs compared to 40 the previous year.
