Sports facilities in ward 72 have been undergoing various upgrades and redevelopments.

Ward 72 councillor Kevin Southgate says: “For years, players and supporters who use the Groenewald Sports Grounds have had to navigate their cars and themselves in and around the many potholes that existed in the gravel parking lot. In winter when it rains the place looked like a mudbath.”

He says that because of this the City of Cape Town then agreed to improve the parking area and as a result, the area has been transformed into a “solid and proper parking space”.

The R650 000 project did not form part of the ward allocation budget.

“The new area has already enhanced the overall aesthetics of the facility and the public will now enjoy the benefits of having a proper parking facility. The upgrades to the facilities really help in boosting the overall morale of the users of the facility and add value to the community. At Groenewald we have budgeted for some playpark equipment within the facility so that children can have an entertainment area when they are at the field with their parents,” adds Southgate.

Ward 72 covers an area which stretches from Southfield to Steenberg, with 14 parks and five sports facilities.

With that in mind, the ward allocation budget is stretched sparingly.

Allenby Drive is one of the grounds which required attention and instead of getting spectator stands, the decision was made to rather procure a new line marker as the old marker had seen better days.

“They were making do with what they had, but when the opportunity arose and some finances [became] available, they asked if they could rather get a line marker and then they could always look at other things later on,” he says.V Continued on page 4.
