Fight cancer – take a run at it

2017-01-31 06:01

Cancer survivors and their families are expected to turn up in their numbers for another Relay for Life event, in which teams spend up to 12 hours walking or running around a track.

Waleed Clayton, Mitchell’s Plain spokesperson, says they expect about 70 to 90 teams of 10 to 15 people each to participate in the Cansa-supporting relay at the Stephan Reagon sports field throughout the night of Friday 3 March.

“We lack getting the survivors from Mitchell’s Plain involved and we always have more survivors from other areas. We are trying to reach out to survivors from the area to get involved in the relay and bring their families, caregivers and neighbours,” he says.

Clayton says they have a rough list of 150 survivors living in Mitchell’s Plain and have made contact with 80 of them so far.

“We are expecting about 150 to 200 survivors and we hope to have between 70 and 90 teams participate,” he says.

The initiative must raise R110 000.

As a start toward this, the committee will host a cupcake sale at Parkhurst Primary School on Saturday.

“This is world cancer day,” says Clayton.

Registration days will be held at the school every Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00. Registration costs R650 per team.

“It is open to anyone to join and you do not need to have been affected by cancer,” says Clayton.
