Final call for subforum elections

2018-10-09 06:01

Following months of delays due to lack of a quorum, an executive committee for the Westridge Subforum will be elected this month.

The Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum (CPF) has set the fourth and final date for the elections to proceed, uncontested. A forum executive was elected five years ago but was declared dysfunctional and disbanded.

“On Tuesday 16 October we will proceed to elect an executive body to serve as the official structure. You are hereby invited to submit an application to join the structure and be eligible to vote and represent your community on this legislative platform,” says Ashley Potts, CPF deputy chairperson.

The CPF first called on organisations to register for the elections in July with elections set to be held on Wednesday 1 August.

The call came in a bid to revive the defunct forum.

The CPF along with the three active Westridge sector block watches called for the election of a subforum for the Westridge sector, with the registration drive set to be held on Wednesday 25 July, ahead of the first election date (“Register for forum elections”, People’s Post, 17 July).

The bodies called on local NGOs, sports clubs, businesses, schools and any other organisations located in the Westridge sector to register for the vote; however, due to a lack of support and attendance at the elections, the elections were postponed to the end of August (“Subforum elections postponed”, People’s Post, 7 August).

“There were only three member organisations and we have put out another call to register. We also did a walkabout in the area with the active block committees to issue forms,” Potts said at the time.

The meeting was postponed to Wednesday 23 August and then further postponed.

“We have three active block watches and we are in the process of establishing another four,” says Potts.

The subforum is for the entire area of Westridge and includes The Westridge and Westgate.

Organisations, including churches and schools, are urged to register ahead of the elections to allow them access to vote.

V The elections will take place on Tuesday 16 October at the Dagbreek Hall from 19:00 to 21:00. For more information, contact Ashley Potts on 082 887 6440 or at ashley@drugcentre.org.za.
