Final Fives snags to finish field

2018-11-27 06:00

The final stages of the construction of an artificial five-a-side football court at Vangate Mall is nearing its completion.

As reported (“Enter Fives tournament”, People’s Post, 20 February), Fives Futbol joined forces with Vangate Mall for the development of the facility in an effort to bring the service closer to residents who are interested in playing five-a-side football closer to home.

“The Fives Futbol currently is 80% completed. I have done four site visits to the facility. It does not come out of City funding, but a partnership between Vangate Mall property management as well as Fives
Futbol. The process is that Fives Futbol are basically looking for a space to rent to promote their sport.

“I have been to the facility over the weekend and it is almost 80% completed. Nets are going up,” says ward councillor for the area Anthony Moses.Snags being tackled

While construction is well on its way to completion, Moses has also been informed of the possible snags the project still faces.

“Something that I need to investigate, after I received a phone call from our planning department, is the assumption or allegations that proper planning processes weren’t followed.

“When I advised Fives Futbol, when they apply for putting that structure up on the land that is zoned for parking, they need to apply via the proper planning procedures to put up the structure.

“I have also advised them that if they go the long route it will almost take a year, but it is also something that can take three to four months which is consent use to have that kind of activity there,” says Moses.

He confirms that the matter is being investigated, but that there is nothing to worry about as he says formal processes have to be followed.

While certain snags are being attended to, Moses reiterates that he is glad that Vangate Mall have engaged with the community it serves.Building the community

“Now it is there. I want the community to see that Vangate Mall does not only care about making money, but that they also care about their customers. Also, to see that they are promoting a healthy lifestyle.

“It is a good partnership between the private sector and the public sector where we can see how they plough back into our communities.

“We are quite excited because now our children don’t have to go Hanover Park, Century City, but they got it right at their doorstep.

“What we have discussed with Fives Futbol, some of the youngsters who are very interested in Fives Futbol is that they should be given opportunities at the facility in order to upskill them as well as the employment which can be there for them.”
