More than 70 people from Molokoane Street in Mandela Park, in Hout Bay, were left homeless after fire broke out this morning, Tuesday 26 February, around 10:00.  The cause of the fire is still unknown and most of the victims were reportedly not at home when the fire started. The fire is the second in less than two years. In 2017, the area was destroyed when fire ravaged a large section of Imizamo Yethu.

Nobuntu Mhaga, one of the victims, said: “We don’t know what happened and we are devastated. This is very bad as it is happening for a second time and affecting the same people. We are defeated.”

Another victim, Zanele Khululekile, says she has a 3-year-old baby that is exposed to “this traumatising” situation. Khululekile says City of Cape Town Officials attended the scene and collected data of the affected families. “They said there is no material available at this stage, we do not know what is going to happen. Everyone one is still gathered here, some are trying to clear their spots. It is sad,” she said.

Richard Bosman, executive director for safety and security, says the City’s Fire and Rescue Services responded with nine fire engines. He said no injuries were reported.

Warrant Tanya Lesch, spokesperson for Hout Bay Police Station, says officials are still at the scene. “At this stage the cause of the fire could not be determined.  It seems as if about 20 shacks were burnt down,” she says.
