Fire safety roll out now open

2019-03-05 06:00

A fire safety project to assist residents living in wendy houses will be rolled out in ward 82 as an initiative by the ward councillor, Sheval Arendse.

“If you are living in a wendy house and you are afraid that it will catch fire, you may qualify to have a motion and or fire alarm installed. I made a ward allocation budget available to roll out the project,” says Arendse.

“In 2017 I saw a vision where wendy houses were [catching fire] and I set budget aside for smoke alarms for the 2018/19 [financial year],” says Arendse.

“I had to wait for the budget to be approved and then started the process in obtaining addresses of where people are living in wendy houses,” he explained.

Arendse says he was hoping to reach 200 households but to date, since the launch of the project, he has only received around 50 applications.

“We are not going to just install the detectors. The residents must complete a fire safety workshop as well. This is the first roll-out of its kind in Mitchell’s Plain,” says Arendse.

The alarms cost around R300 each and the first session has already begun.

The workshop will include sessions on fire terminology, causes of fires in the home, symbolic signs, extinguishers, fire prevention goals, safe fire fighting, classifications of fire, how to prevent fires, alerting the fire department, fire hose reel, types of extinguishers and more.

“Prevention is better than losing your precious items, is included in our next workshop and you are requested to bring your utility bill and or proof of address to Tafelsig Hall, 115 Kilimanjaro Street between 09:00 to 13:00, Monday to Friday,” says Arendse.
