First wave of luring visitors

2016-03-29 06:00

A project team is being established to explore options for Long Beach.

The team, which is still unofficial, will be made up of members of different City of Cape Town departments, the Simon’s Town Amenities Development Company and the Simon’s Town Business Forum, says subcouncil chairperson Felicity Purchase.

Ward councillor Simon Liell-Cock will also serve on the project team.

“The team will look at developing recreational opportunities at the beach. Long Beach is ideal for diving, paddle skiing, kayaking and waterskiing,” says Purchase.

The beach is currently underused. The beach has been the site of antisocial behaviour, which has prompted a call to demolish unused toilets at the site (“Nasty toilets set to go”, People’s Post, 1 December 2015). The toilet building has been vandalised.

The best way to make the beach safer would be to demolish the ablution block, David Erickson of the Simon’s Town Community Police Forum previously told People’s Post.

Belinda Walker, Mayco member for community services and special projects, says the necessary documentation for a demolition permit has been submitted.

The project to improve recreational facilities is “only in the planning phase and there are no details at present”, she adds.
