City of Cape Town officials urge residents of Athlone and surrounding areas to avoid dumping waste in street drains.

Ward councillor Aslam Cassiem was called out to check on blocked drains filled with food waste last Monday.

Cassiem says various items, including food, could be seen flowing out of drains during the cleanup.

“I was called out to a recurring problem in Maslamoney Road in Athlone industrial 2. As can be seen in the picture, there were carrots coming out of the drains. I logged it immediately and a cleaning team was dispatched. We are, however, in need of a permanent solution. In the Rylands area, everyday sludge is being removed from the sewer. Where it comes from still baffles me,” says Cassiem.

V Readers are advised to contact the City with any information about illegal dumping.
